Ed Argow Dies At Age 87

Argow started at Grey Advertising in the mail room in the 1950s. He moved into media planning/buying soon after. Noticing that salespeople were making more money than planners and buyers, he decided to give sales a shot. He started at a small rep firm in NYC and excelled. He then went to work for McGavern Guild when Ralph Guild hired him away from a smaller rep firm in New York. He was promoted to VP in the 1960s, later moved to Chicago to run McGavren Guild from there as EVP, and eventually president.

In 1976 he moved with his family to be EVP & General Sales Manager at KFAC and eventually became partner and owner. After selling KFAC in 1989-1990, he continued to work in the business consulting for radio stations and remained active in the business until 2014 at the age of 85, and only retired after being diagnosed with cancer.

Ralph Guild tells Radio Ink he worked with Argow from 1957 to about 1985. “He was hired when I opened the New York office of McGavren-Guild Radio in 1957. Ed then hired and trained a very effective sales force which went on to become known as one of the best radio sales organizations in the country. Ed left New York to run our Chicago office for a number of years.   Later, when we purchased KFAC, the classical music radio station in Los Angeles, he moved there to become sales manager of the station. KFAC became the most financially successful classical music radio station in the country at the time. He and a partner then purchased KFAC and ultimately sold it. Ed’s ability to sell the unique characteristics of the station’s listeners vs just the numbers separated him from most radio marketers and led to his success.”

Argow’s good friend and former colleague from KFAC, Courtney Thompson, told Radio Ink, “Anyone who knew or worked with Ed will tell you he had a deep passion for the business but an even deeper passion to see people on his team and clients flourish. He also had both an endearing sense of humor and quick wit. Ed was truly a noble prince of our industry, a one of a kind”
